Lawrence Whitehurst, MD, FAAFP is a board certified family physician, and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, with 30 years of practice experience, most of which he gained as a highly decorated military physician who served in both the US Army and US Air Force over a distinguished 25 yearcareer.Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he obtained a bachelors degree in Engineering Science with Honors from the University of Virginia in 1970 and went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974. He completed an internship and family practice residency at Womack Army Medical Center in 1977, after which he served tours of duty in both the active Army and the Reserve Components until transferring to the US Air Force in 1990. He was a commander four times and a Chief of the Medical Staff twice, including two overseas tours in Germany, his last command tour lasting 4 years during which he commanded all the Air Force Medical forces in Central Germany.

While in this position, he provided direct care for a former President of the United States and arranged medical services for the current President, the Secretary of State, the First Lady, and the Secretary of Defense during their visits. He retired from the Air Force in 2000 and spent the next 4 years in Alaska, providing care for Native Alaskans for 2 years as part of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Native Health Corporation and in private practice in Fairbanks. Following these positions, he returned to his native Virginia, settled in Culpeper, and opened this practice for CMA in October 2006. Dr. Whitehurst does full spectrum family medicine, and cares for all ages with special interests in aerospace medicine, infectious diseases, diabetes, trauma care, and pain management. He is on Active Staff with admitting privileges to both Culpeper Regional Hospital and Fauquier Hospital.


 

Leslie Raiford, MS, RN, CFNP is a certified family nurse practitioner who has spent her whole career in family medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, she obtained her Associates Degree in Nursing with the Academic Achievement Award from Norfolk State University in 1992 and her BS in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth University in 1994. She went on to obtain her Masters Degree as a family nurse practitioner from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia in 2002. For the next 4 years she cared for patients as the sole practitioner in the rural town of Elkton, Virginia where she took over the practice of a physician who had been there for over 40 years. She is a member of the American Academy of Home Care Physicians and the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners.

 

Practice Philosophy: Both Dr. Whitehurst and Ms Raiford are strong believers in preventive care whenever possible, and in developing strong collegial relationships with their patients.
